Uterine Fibroids
How Did I Get Fibroids?

What are Uterine Fibroids?

Fibroids are solid growths within the uterus. Single or multiple fibroids may be present and may vary in size from less than 1cm to greater than 12 cm. Fortunately, fibroids are usually benign, that is non cancerous. Unfortunately, they are very common and are the number one cause of hysterectomies in America. Fibroids affect women during their reproductive years and touch the lives of at least 50% of women women over 35 years of age.

 What causes Uterine Fibroids?

The cause of fibroids is not known. We do know however, that their growth is influenced by hormones and blood supply. With a decrease in the production of estrogen at menopause, fibroids stop growing and shrink, leading to the disappearance of symptoms related to their size and/or location.

Uterine Fibroids, due to Hormone Imbalance respond well to Bioidentical Hormones Restoration Therapy (BHRT)

PELLET BHRT more closely mimics the body's way of delivering these hormones to the organs in need.  Hence, it is the preferred method of Hormone Replacement therapy.

Symptoms of Fibroids:

Frequently, fibroids cause no problems at all. However, for some women fibroids produce troublesome symptoms which may leave them feeling tired and lethargic and cause disruption to lifestyle and relationships. You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Irregular/Heavy BleedingThis is the most common symptom and may vary from bleeding for a longer period of time, passing clots, or irregular periods.
  • Pain/PressureModerate to severe period pain may be experienced which may feel sharp, cramp-like or may produce a constant dull ache in the abdomen or lower back. This last type of pain is related to the fibroid placing pressure on the surrounding organs within the pelvis. For example, uterine fibroids may place pressure on the urinary bladder resulting in urinary problems. Also, constipation and other bowel disorder may indicate that there is backward pressure on the bowel.
  • Infertility
  • Infertility, or failure to achieve pregnancy, may occur when certain types of fibroids block the fallopian   tubes preventing fertilization, (the sperm and egg from meeting). Fibroids may also distort the cavity of the uterus interfering with Implantation, (the imbedding of the embryo in the lining of the uterus). Fibroids in the wall of the uterus may also cause  infertility. Other symptoms resulting from fibroids as excessive bleeding or severe pain may also reduce the chance of conception.

     Management of Fibroids

    This traditionally includes:

    • Contraceptives (oral contraceptives, depo provera, etc)
    • Cycling on Progestins (synthetic progesterones used only during the last half of the menstrual cycle)
    • Uterine Artery Embolization (Blocking the blood flow in the uterine artery to reduce blood flow to the uterus and the fibroids within)
    • Myolysis (Laparoscopic cauterization of the vessels feeding the individual fibroids)
    • Myomectomy (Surgical removal of the fibroids- can be performed via a laparoscope or trough a larger abdominal incision)
    • Hysterectomy (Removal of the uterus- can be performed laparoscopically, vaginally or through a larger incision abdominally)
  • The presence of Fibroids usually indicates Hormone Imbalance.

BHRT has been shown to be helpful in the management of fibroid related symptoms, often avoiding major surgery.  The reduction of estrogen dominance through BHRT works in concert with proper nutrition, regular exercise and stress management.

Hormone Imbalance includes much more than the symptoms addressed in this section on  Fibroids. Other symptoms that may or may not be related to Fibroids include:

    How do I Proceed?

Step 1:   Take the Hormone Profile Survey

    Step 2:      Get Tested.

Based on the information in your profile you will be advised what hormones need to be tested.  You wil be sent the appropriate test kit.  If  you are interested in Pellet BHRT where the hormones are painlessly inserted under the skin for 4-6 months of symptoms relief, you will require a blood test.  If you are interested in Traditional BHRT, which requires taking the hormones daily, you will need a saliva test.

Step 3:      Consultation With Dr. Camille Semple-Daly
    Board Certified in OB/GYN

When we receive your test results, (approximately 2 weeks after the lab receives your sample), you will be contacted to arrange an appointment for a consultation with the doctor.

    Step 4:      Management Plan.

At the time of your consultation a detailed care plan will be provided.  This will be based on the consultation with the physician, physical exam, symptoms and test results.  All care plans are based on your own needs, and include an evaluation of Nutrition, Exercise and Lifestyle choices.

In the case of Traditional BHRT, a prescription will be sent to our compounding pharmacist, (or a compounding pharmacy of your choice), based on the results of your consultation, symptoms and salivary test.  Our bioidentical hormone restoration plan is individualized specifically for you.  Our therapy is never mass produced. One size does not fit all.

Step 5:      Continued Plan of Care

At the time of your consultation a detailed care plan will be provided.  This will be based on the consultation with the physician, your symptoms and test results.  All care plans are based on your own needs, and include an evaluation of Nutrition, Exercise and Lifestyle choices.
